Typograpic Art - The Beginnings

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed. The arrangement of type involves selecting typefaces, point size, line length, line-spacing, letter-spacing and many more.

Typography is also used as a decorative device. Typography is the work of typesetters - also known as compositors -, typographers, graphic designers, art directors, manga artists, comic book artists, graffiti artists, and now-anyone who arranges words, letters, numbers, and symbols for publication, display, or distribution.

The word, typography, is derived from the Greek words τύπος typos "form" or "impression" and γράφειν graphein "to write".

Especially now it is a very important tool to design websites, blogs and other platforms on the internet.

The two authors write in an article in the smashing magazine about typography and the consequences when we trust only the appeareances and don't look closer on the written.

They say, that there have to be a balance between the visual and the verbal aspect of a design. But in this article "When Typography Speaks Louder Than Words" they show how the visual design can blur our senses and we see things in a completely different way. This can lead to a massive misunderstanding.

The two terms "visual language" and "verbal language" are explained at the beginning of the article.
