About the Project

Wordificator.com has been an evolving creative experiment for more than a decade now. What I started as a small side project in 2012 because of an urgent need to create this kind of images gradually grew into a word-cloud/word-art generator used by people all over the world.

2012: The first version goes online

The original Wordificator launched in 2012 as a lightweight browser tool. It provided only a few basic shapes, a single color entered via RGB code, and a server-side PHP script that arranged words inside a silhouette. The interface was simple, but the concept resonated immediately: turning words into recognizable shapes felt playful and unique.

2013: Wordificator for iPad

In 2013, Wordificator expanded beyond the web with a dedicated iPad app. It featured twelve predefined shapes, a user-friendly color picker, and the ability to export high-resolution images directly to the photo album. Users could even import their own photos for custom shapes. The touch-based workflow opened the project to a wider audience and made the creative process more intuitive.

2021: Relaunch of the web version

In 2021, the web version received a full redesign. The interface became cleaner and easier to use, additional shapes were added, and the overall workflow was modernized. However, the generator remained monochrome, and image creation still ran server-side through PHP. Despite the limitations, this version formed a stable foundation for the next major evolution.

2025: An entirely new version

The most significant transformation happened in 2025. The entire algorithm was rewritten from scratch, adding multi-color support, an word improved placement engine and a much larger selection of shapes. The biggest shift was moving to fully client-side generation, resulting in faster rendering, more privacy and a more responsive creative process. As a bonus, the web version now replaces the iOS version, which was no longer maintained and thus dropped out of the app store. But I am working on a new version for iOS and Android with some more, new features.

Hopefully the new engine, simple JavaScript engine is a stable ground for future features such as advanced color modes, enhanced layout strategies, new shape categories and more fonts.

What’s next?

Wordificator continues to grow through experimentation and community feedback. If you have ideas or feature requests, feel free to reach out anytime at contact@wordificator.com. The project has always been shaped not only by its code, but also by the creativity of its users.
